As part of the development process at this chemical firm in Kingsport, Tenn., employees can work in various areas of the organization to build their experiences. From infrastructure to applications, employees are given assignments in different areas to build their knowledge of company processes. Interested employees are also given opportunities outside of IT, in areas such as manufacturing, to enhance their skills. The IT group has its own team site on Eastman's intranet, with a section dedicated to learning and development opportunities. The listings direct employees to training courses, upcoming conferences, webcasts and other tools to help them with the development process. New employees are paired with a mentor to help them learn the ropes of not only the IT organization, but the company as a whole. An IT Development Club gives newer employees a better understanding of the organization, helps them identify career opportunities and network with others to develop business relationships. The group hosts informational speakers who are usually top IT leaders, and social events where employees can enjoy activities together such as bowling or hiking. Flexible or alternate work arrangements include standard workweeks compressed into fewer than five eight-hour days. Many employees choose to work four nine-hour days and one four-hour day. A flexible work schedule gives employees the opportunity to vary their arrival, departure and meal times for the workday. Employees can also work from home when the need arises. About 75% of IT employees take advantage of one of these forms of flexible working arrangements.
