IT employees at this payroll accounting firm, based in Rochester, N.Y., encourage one another to stay fit through a variety of wellness activities. For the past two years, for example, IT employees have taken part in the Eat Well, Live Well program, in which participants are challenged to increase the number of steps they take daily and the number of servings of fruits and vegetables they eat daily. This year, more than 300 IT employees on 16 teams participated. Last summer, a group of IT employees organized and completed a 15-mile bike ride along the Erie Canal bike trail. And in October, IT employees organized a three-mile walk/run event at a local park, with nearly 300 employees participating. The company also supports the health and well-being of its workforce by offering a personal wellness coordinator who helps employees set and achieve individual health and fitness goals. In addition, workers can take advantage of confidential on-site health screenings, free access to a tobacco cessation program, online resources to help them manage their health, free on-site flu shots, and free annual physicals and eye exams. The company also hosts an annual charity poker tournament to raise money for breast cancer research, takes part in Habitat for Humanity building projects, and runs food and clothing drives. This year, IT employees partnered with an inner-city school to help fifth and sixth graders with perfect scores in math and language arts stay motivated. Employees helped the students open and run a school store, teaching them about budgeting, marketing, procurement and other aspects of retail and business management.
