Why You Want to Work There
Top 10 ranking: No. 7 for benefits, No. 8 for diversity, No. 7 for training A testament to this automotive company's commitment to employee growth can be found at the very top of the IT ranks. The company's executive vice president and CIO, Ken Yerves, started at Deerfield Beach, Fla.-based JM Family Enterprises as a software developer in 1989. Now Yerves is helping others achieve that kind of upward mobility as a member of the executive management team's employee development initiative. Employee development programs focus on career management, updating of skill sets and leadership development. The main component of the IT worker development plan is the career management program, Tech Track, which helps create a road map for pursuing either technical or management positions. On the technical side, IT workers take on increasingly complex responsibilities that prepare them for top technical positions such as enterprise architect. The management track readies IT workers in positions as team leads and creates a road map for pursuing IT management opportunities. There's flexibility, too: IT workers can try out junior-level management roles and still have the option of re-entering the technical track. Newly promoted managers are enrolled in an internal one-year program that teaches critical managerial skills, and workers who are identified as having potential for senior management are enrolled in a two-year internal leadership development program that teaches related skills and gives them opportunities to network and establish relationships with peers and business executives throughout the company.
