100 Best Places to Work in IT 2009

Employer Profile

No. 4
University of Pennsylvania
Philadelphia, Pa. [Middle Atlantic]
Why You Want to Work There
Top 10 ranking: No. 1 for benefits, No. 2 for diversity This Ivy League university wanted to improve security for its community following the tragic events at Virginia Tech. Toward that end, the IT group collaborated with the school's public safety group to develop an "instant alert" system. The IT staff worked to find technologies to meet the university's requirements, incorporated additional features, developed an infrastructure that does double-duty by also disseminating nonemergency updates and hosted the system off-site with redundancy. IT also kept costs down by leveraging an existing technology. "This team pulled out all the stops and went full throttle to finish this enormous and complex project in an astoundingly short time," says associate provost for education Andy Binns. The university, which is located in University City, one of the most famous communities in Philadelphia, offers hundreds of campus activities throughout the year, including athletic events, music and theater productions, and lectures by intellectuals and dignitaries. IT employees are also learning new technologies, including 802.11n wireless and advanced voice services such as VoIP and unified messaging.
