Why You Want to Work There
Top 10 ranking: No. 2 for retention Retirement planning made easy is one of the goals of San Diego Gas & Electric's benefits program. In addition to a 401(k) plan, employees at this California utility participate in the Cash Balance Plan, a noncontributory qualified retirement plan. The employee's account is credited with 7.5% of eligible compensation (base pay, merit lump sums and bonus pay) with interest credits equal to the average rate on a 30-year Treasury bond in the November preceding the current plan year. This benefit is protected by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. and participation begins at the date of hire, provided the employee completes a full year of eligible service. Vesting is at three years of service. It's also a "portable" benefit -- vested participants who leave the company or retire can choose payout options including lump sum payment, rollover to a qualified savings plan, or single or joint life annuities. Communication is also important at San Diego Gas & Electric: Business initiatives and corresponding IT involvement and opportunities are communicated through company newsletters, Web sites, e-mails, town hall meetings, all-hands meetings and training sessions.
