Four considerations for SSD deployment
While solid state drives offer increased performance, the key to figuring out the role they can play in the data center is balancing that performance against cost.

Thomson Reuters generates savings
When temperatures dip below zero, homes and businesses in Eagan, Minn., crank up their heat, creating a peak load on the local power company, Dakota Electric.

IBM's internal innovations
If you had a blank check, access to IBM's latest products and its best talent, and your task was to renovate a 2,000-square-foot legacy data center, the result would be IBM's sparkling showcase in Southbury, Conn.

Fix data before warehousing it
Many data warehouse operators have attempted to implement Master Data Management to improve data quality, but most have focused on mastering data after transactions occur. This approach does little to improve quality because data is "fixed" after the fact. The best way to improve data quality is to move the process upstream of the data warehouse and before transactions are executed.

DiskDigger Gets Better, But Stays Free
DiskDigger goes well beyond the usual undelete utility that's offered gratis as a leader product, though as of version 0.8 it does that. It will also dig "beneath the file system" (author Dmitry Brant's line, which I plan to borrow regularly in the future) to recover data on a sector-by-sector basis from hard drives, thumb drives, etc. (Think of sectors as little boxes containing data that are arranged in tracks/circles on your hard drive.)

Why IT should start throwing data away
It can be a storage nightmare: Given expanding regulatory requirements and the key role that electronic records now play in lawsuits, some enterprises are saving every bit of data they have, just to be safe. As a gauge of storage demand, IDC says the total amount of disk storage shipped last year grew 40.5 percent from 2007.
