For companies drowning in data, extracting value from all this information is a major IT priority. But success depends on how well customers tackle significant organizational challenges.
A majority of companies have either deployed big data projects -- designed to generate more value
from large volumes and a wide variety of enterprise data --or expect to eventually do so. This is according to a July
2012 survey of 1,428 visitors to CIO, Computerworld, CSO, InfoWorld, Network World and ITworld websites.
Among those with plans for big data, 54% say these projects are critical or a high priority. It's no wonder why:
On average, respondents expect the amount of data they are managing to nearly double within the next year to
18 months, from 194 terabytes to 297 terabytes. Today, 19% of large enterprises -- companies with $1
billion or more in annual revenues -- manage more than 1 petabyte of data; by late 2013, some 31% expect to
crack the petabyte threshold.

What's more, nearly three-fourths (73%) predict big data will be in mainstream use in at least one business unit or department three years from now. Nearly half (48%), expect it will be in production in multiple departments or business units, especially at larger companies.
For now, however, most companies appear to be in the early stages of adoption. They're building out their infrastructure, making plans to deploy big data technologies and assessing their staffing needs. IT leaders -- who are, for the most part, heading their companies' big data efforts -- have not yet fully engaged the enterprise in exploring how to apply new technologies for data management and analysis. Meanwhile, IT and other business leaders perceive the challenges of implementing big data technologies somewhat differently -- a gap that, if not addressed, could stymie future rollouts.
