EBay creating second development center in India

IDG News Service - EBay is hiring for a development center it is setting up in Bangalore, its second in the country.

The online auction company said Tuesday that it will hire 1,000 employees over the next three years at the new facility. It already employs 2,200 workers at a development center in Chennai in south India.

The company also has a business unit in Mumbai.

A large number of technology companies including Intel, IBM, and Microsoft have for many years sent to India software development and design work to take advantage of the country's relatively low-cost and easily available staff.

While some companies outsource the work to Indian service providers, others prefer to set up their own subsidiaries. A third group combines in-house development at their subsidiaries with outsourcing to local companies, in a so-called "hybrid model."

EBay has decided to set up its own facility and staff it, a spokeswoman said.

The development staff in Bangalore will do work for eBay's Marketplaces business and PayPal, the company's online payments unit. The company said it is hiring people with product development experience across many functions, ranging from research and platform and application development to product management, marketing and analytics.

The center in Chennai is also working in a number of areas, including doing work for Marketplaces and PayPal.

The expansion in Bangalore is part of the company's global talent strategy, eBay said. "We will be looking at increasing our staff globally as well keeping in mind a match between business needs and availability of right talent," the spokeswoman said via email.
