Computerworld - It might have been missed in all the smartphone announcements from CES, but the new Droid Razr Maxx unveiled by Motorola has a stunningly large battery that's nearly twice as powerful as others on the market.
The Maxx has a 3300 mAh battery, while many media-centric, multi-tasking smartphones have batteries that are only in the 1800 mAh range. Even so, the Maxx feels lightweight in the hand, not that much heavier and thicker than its predecessor, the Droid Razr, when I got a chance to hold each one side by side.
The Droid Razr, first released in October, will soon go on sale in purple from Verizon Wireless for $200 and a two-year contract. Pricing and availability on Verizon for the Maxx were not announced.
Motorola said the Maxx's battery is the biggest for a smartphone, and estimated it will last for 21 hours of talk on a single charge or allow 15 hours of movie watching and two days of continuous music playing -- the equivalent of 900 songs.
Both the Droid Razr and the Droid Razr Maxx will run on Verizon Wireless 4G LTE, and with Android 2.3.5, which will be upgraded to Android 4.0.
The Maxx has a 4.3-in Super Amoled Advanced touchscreen with a 540-by-960-pixel resolution. It also has an 8-megapixel and a 1.3-megapixel camera; 1GB of RAM, with 16 GB of internal storage, plus a 16 GB microSD card. And it uses a dual-core 1.2GHz processor.
The Maxx weighs 5.1 ounces, and measures 5.14 inches by 2.7 inches and is 0.35 inches thick.
