Computerworld - LAS VEGAS -- There are smartphones and smart TVs. Now there are smart eyeglasses.
PixelOptics was at the Pepcom gadget showcase held in conjunction with CES showing off its electronic-focusing eye ware.
Mark Graham, director of development at Virginia-based PixelOptics, said the company has developed technology for people who wear bifocal glasses, which are also known as progressives.
Traditionally, someone wearing progressives has to look out through either the top or the bottom of their lenses depending on whether they need the glasses for driving or reading. With the smart glasses, the wearer can change the focus of the lenses by tapping on the frame near the temple.
Graham said liquid crystal embedded in the lenses is electronically activated to switch the focus of the lenses.
PixelOptics began shipping the smart glasses last August. The glasses are priced at $1,250, which includes frames, lenses, a charger and an anti-scratch-coating on the glasses.
