Iomega releases new 12-bay NAS array
Fully configured new StorCenter array with 36TB of capacity is priced at around $10,500
Computerworld - EMC subsidiary Iomega this week introduced a 12-bay, rack-mountable top-tier network-attached storage (NAS) array.
The array is certified with all major hypervisor platforms and supports Hyper-V live data migration.
The new StorCenter px12-350r Network Storage Array replaces the Iomega StorCenter ix12-300r as Iomega's top-of-the-line rackmount NAS offering.
The StorCenter NAS server also comes with native support for Amazon's S3 cloud storage service and MozyPro's online service for offsite backup.
The new StorCenter px12-350r comes with up to four 2TB or 3TB 7,200rpm SATA drives. The 2U (3.5-in high) form factor rack-mountable NAS array has a maximum of 12 slots for drive expansion.
The NAS array is targeted at small to mid-sized businesses and enterprise remote offices as a primary storage device or backup target. The new StorCenter system is priced from 6,000. A fully configured 36TB model retails for about $10,500.
"It automates the setting up what you could call a virtual private network," said Jay Krone, Iomega senior director of network products. "Up to 250 storage devices and or Windows or Mac OS devices can behave as if they're all in the same network. So you get the sharing and access you'd get from a cloud service like DropBox, only you're operating the service for your business."
The px12-350r has multiple RAID levels and hot swappable drives. The system is available in two versions: an 8TB model that sells for $5,999; and a 12TB model that sells for $6,999.
There are two expansion pack options: an 8TB model that retails for $1,399, and a 12TB model that sells for $1,699. Additionally, 128GB Solid State Drives (SSDs) are available from Iomega at $399 each.
The px12-350r is powered by an Intel Core2 Duo processor and 4GB memory. The array comes with four gigabit Ethernet ports.
Software on the array supports data replication with device-to-device copy jobs that can be defined and scheduled as needed.
The NAS server is also certified for use with VMware vSphere 5, Citrix XenServer 5.6, and Windows Server 2003/2008/2008 R2.
The px12-350r supports EMC's Avamar data deduplication capability, which reduces bandwidth for remote office or branch office backup.
The NAS server can also be used as an ISCSI target, providing block level access. The array has a top sequential read of 425MB/sec.
