Verizon, Sprint set to sell new $200 Android smartphones
Sales of Verizon's Droid Incredible 2 start on April 28; Sprint will begin selling Nexus S 4G on May 8
Computerworld - Verizon Wireless will start selling the HTC's Droid Incredible 2 on April 28 while Sprint will put the Nexus S 4G from Google on sale May 8.
Both smartphones will sell for $199.99 with two year service agreements, the carriers announced on Tuesday.
The Droid Incredible 2 will run Android 2.2, and has a 4-inch display.
The Nexus S 4G gets Android 2.3, also known as Gingerbread, the fastest version of Android for smartphones, Sprint noted. It has a 4-in. contour display to go with the phone's curved design for what is designed as a more comfortable feel, Sprint added.
Both phones feature 1GHz processors, a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip runs the Droid's and a Samsung processor in the Nexus S.
The Droid Incredible 2 outdoes the Nexus S in camera resolution, with the Droid's 8.0 megapixel rear-facing camera and 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera. Nexus S has a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera and a VGA-quality front-facing camera (which is less than 1 megapixel in resolution).
Verizon supports the Droid unit with its CDMA+ network. The company has recently announced two devices, the Droid Charge from Samsung and the HTC ThunderBolt, which sell for $299.99 and $249.99 respectively. that will use its faster LTE network,
The new Droid Incredible 2 is global-ready with three bands supported in more than 200 countries.
An unlimited smartphone data plan for $29.99 a month is available with the Droid Incredible 2, keeping with Verizon's current unlimited approach, one that many experts expect will end later this year.
Sprint's Nexus S 4G operates over its Wimax network at up to 6 Mbps download speeds and converts to slower 3G speeds where Wimax is not available. Sprint charges its $10 monthly premium data plan for the Nexus device atop its Everything Data plan for unlimited talk, text and Web at $69.99 a month.
