LTE wireless for real-time, remote video streaming announced
Verizon, LiveCast build system for media, companies and government agencies
Computerworld - Verizon Wireless and LiveCast Media today announced 4G Mobile Reporter for use with Verizon's LTE network to send live high-definition video wirelessly with a laptop and USB modem.
The 4G Mobile Reporter system is targeted at media services, government agencies and companies that could use real-time video-streaming capabilities from remote locations as a low-cost alternative to using traditional satellite and microwave delivery, the two companies said in an announcement.
The system will work with existing camera equipment to deliver the video feeds with low latency, eliminating the need for satellite trucks. GPS is embedded throughout the stream, allowing a map display next to the video playback. The two companies will demonstrate the system at the Verizon booth at the National Association of Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas this week.
LiveCast provides its Duo software for laptops and a converter device that connects a professional-grade camera to a laptop if HDMI input isn't available. Verizon already sells 4G LTE modems, such as the UML290 and LG VL600, which can be used in the 4G Mobile Reporter system.
The system is backward compatible with the Verizon 3G network.
The 4G Mobile Reporter system, including LiveCast Duo software and the Blackmagic H. 264 converter, costs $970, or a monthly access fee of $114. A special promotion through July reduces the initial cost to $729, or a $90 monthly access fee. These prices are in addition to the 4G LTE USB modem monthly cost of $50 for 5GB of service and $80 for 10GB, with $10 more for each additional 1GB over the allowed amount.
