Groupon adds four countries in Asia amid Google rumors
IDG News Service - Groupon, the Internet deal site that Google reportedly plans to buy for $5 billion, expanded in Asia by buying three websites in the region for an undisclosed sum.
Groupon bought uBuyiBuy, which serves a few countries in Asia, Beeconomic, which focuses on Singapore, and Atlaspost, which is aimed at Taiwan.
The move comes as Groupon is reportedly in talks to be bought out by Google. Google may pay as much as $5.3 billion for the website company, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
The purchased websites will all transition to the Groupon brand name and site design in coming months, Groupon said. Groupon has already renamed the local operations as Groupon Hong Kong, Groupon Singapore, Groupon Philippines and Groupon Taiwan.
The new entities join their Asian counterpart, Groupon Japan, which launched in August 2010.
