Western Digital enters the enterprise-class hard drive market

The WD 25 drive has a sustained read speed of 128MB/sec.

Computerworld - Consumer hard drive company Western Digital Corp. today announced it is entering the market for enterprise-class data center drives with its first serial-attached SCSI (SAS) hard disk product.

The WD S25 is a 10,000 rpm, 2.5-inch, hard drive that has up to 300GB capacity and is aimed at high-I/O performance applications in enterprise servers and enterprise storage applications.

The WD S25 has both 3Gbit/sec. and 6 Gbit/sec. SAS interfaces and a sustained sequential data read rate of 128 MB/sec. and a 1.6 million-hour mean time between failures rating.

The WD S25 is available to resellers, and shipments have begun.

"Our entry into the traditional-enterprise market continues the strategic expansion and diversification of WD's broad market and product portfolio, and significantly increases our addressable revenue opportunity," John Coyne, president and CEO of Western Digital, said in a statement.
