Weather hounds NASA's tough-luck shuttle Endeavour
Sixth try the charm? NASA schedules sixth Endeavour launch attempt for Wednesday
Computerworld - Thunder clouds and lightning forced NASA yesterday to postpone its fifth attempt to launch the space shuttle Endeavour.
NASA has rescheduled the launch for 6:03 p.m. Eastern time tomorrow, though weather forecasts are once again calling for thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon and night. NASA expressed optimism about the latest plan, noting there is only a 40% chance of bad weather.
"Technically, we've been really clean the last two days with our vehicle," said Launch Integration Manager Mike Moses, referring to Endeavour's launch attempts on Sunday and Monday. "It's just been the weather scenario that got us."
NASA in June aborted the shuttle's first two launch attempts because of a gaseous hydrogen leak. Earlier this month, NASA said the leak had been repaired and Endeavour was ready to go.
NASA cited weather issues in its decisions to postpone the last three launch attempts.
Once the shuttle finally takes off on its 16-day mission to the International Space Station, its seven-person crew is set to make five spacewalks and complete construction of an onboard Japanese laboratory. NASA has called the operation one of its most technical missions yet, one that will call on the power of three separate robots.
