PC World - Every day more rumors about Apple's iPhone plans keep popping up, and today is no exception. With Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference just days away, the excitement over new iPhone models has the tech world falling all over itself to deliver the next big scoop.
Here's what's going on:
A photograph that is purported to be a screen shot from an unreleased overhaul of AT&T's support Website lists three iPhone models: Original iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone Video. Could iPhone Video be the name of the next iteration of the iPhone?
The photo was uncovered through an anonymous tip by The Unofficial Apple Weblog. The name iPhone Video would fall in line with previous rumors that Apple was adding video capability and onboard video editing to the iPhone. No, we're not going back to the '80s with a gigantic iPhone attached to your vehicle. Carphone Warehouse is the name of an official iPhone reseller in Europe. The retail giant has apparently upgraded its inventory lists to include 16GB and 32GB iPhones coming in black and white, according to Apple Insider. The new models are referred to as "V3," which likely means iPhone Version 3. But as TUAW points out, "V3" could also stand for Video 3 or even Video 3G. That's a bit of a leap, but it's an interesting way to connect the Carphone and AT&T rumors.
Italy's all-iPhone blog iSpazio has two posts up with screen shots of what could be the next iPhone. First reported by TUAW, both iSpazio shots show an all-black iPhone. This coincides with earlier rumors that the front bezel for the iPhone would change from silver to black. The second post shows an iPhone with an illuminated green light at the top, similar to the green light a MacBook has when its built-in Webcam is turned on.
The problem is--at least based on the automated translation--even iSpazio has problems believing these iPhone photos are genuine.
A lower priced iPhone and multiple iPhone models may be coming out soon, according to the Financial Times. Morgan Stanley analyst Kathryn Huberty told FT that Apple would soon introduce either a $99 or $149 iPhone model. Huberty's assertion is based on a Morgan Stanley survey that found a $50 price cut in the iPhone would increase overall iPhone demand by 50 percent, while a $100 reduction would increase demand by 100 percent.
Apple is widely expected to offer a lower-priced iPhone this summer; then again, Apple watchers have expected a $99 iPhone or iPhone Nano for some time. We may actually see the bargain basement iPhone this time, but it's hard to know for sure.
It's only three days until Monday, June 8 when Apple kicks off WWDC '09 with the company's keynote address. The speech is typically used to unveil new gadgets and hardware. PC World will have all the coverage of the WWDC keynote starting on Monday at 10 AM PT.
