Update: Palm Pre could be in warehouses in mid-March, on store shelves in spring
Sprint says only that smartphone to ship by mid-year
Computerworld - The Palm Pre, which was announced in January by Palm Inc. and will be distributed by Sprint Nextel Corp., is targeted to be in stock in warehouses on March 15, presumably for sale soon thereafter, according to a blogger.
The BoyGeniusReport.com reported yesterday that it found the information for the target in-stock date in an internal Sprint document that included end-of-life dates for various phones that Sprint sells. The Pre would replace the Palm 755p, which would reach end of life in May, according to the document.
BoyGenius concludes that the Pre release date might be closer to May or early June, nearly mid-year, given that Sprint would want to sell out the stock of Treo 755p's before selling the Pre.
A Sprint spokeswoman today would not comment on the BoyGeniusReport.com report, but said the Palm Pre will ship sometime in the first half of 2009, reiterating the time frame the company gave at the International CES show in January.
"We are still stating availability in the first half of 2009," she said. "This is what we have said all along and we have not changed our desire to bring the device to our customers when it is fully ready."
Palm officials could not be reached for comment.
Other bloggers have said they are awaiting shipments of test devices of the Pre, which are expected in late February.
