Sybase unveils new mobility software at TechWave
It also touts Afaria 6.0 for mobile device management and security
Computerworld - Sybase Inc. launched the Sybase Unwired Platform today at its annual TechWave conference in Las Vegas. The platform allows customers to group together individual products previously offered for mobilizing enterprise applications.
The Sybase Unwired Platform, expected to ship by the fourth quarter, will allow IT managers to use a single administrative console to centrally manage, secure and deploy mobile data as well as applications and the actual devices that run the applications, Sybase officials said in interviews.
In addition, Sybase unveiled Afaria 6.0 for mobile device management and security. Also expected to be available by year's end, it will feature a local password-recovery feature to help users recover passwords as a way of cutting costs for large businesses that constantly answer password requests.
Sybase also announced SQL Anywhere 11, which includes more than 200 new features for the popular database and synchronization tool, which already has 10 million users. SQL Anywhere 10, the previous version, shipped nearly two years ago, said Mike Paola, director of SQL Anywhere product management.
A free developer edition is available for download, and a five-user service package is available for $599. The SQL Anywhere product is embedded in servers, desktops, remote office devices and handhelds. One important new feature allows users to do full-text searches, Paola said.
In another mobile management announcement, Motorola Inc. on Monday announced Mobility Services Platform 3.2, which is already shipping in several handheld models from Motorola. The software helps in provisioning handhelds, and with remote monitoring and management. A network administrator can wirelessly provision a mobile computer from any location without having to physically handle the device when updating an operating system, firmware, an application or security.
