Walmart.com tests free classifieds
The Classifieds beta offers products, services not offered on the Web site
June 3, 2008 12:00 PM ETComputerworld - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has added free classified advertising from start-up Oodle.com to its Web site, building a potential competitor to Craigslist.
The new site, launched last week, offers consumers more than 30 million classified ads from around the country, drawing from Oodle's previously posted listings.
Launched in early 2005, San Mateo, Calif.-based Oodle Inc. said it attracts more than 4 million unique visitors each month and aggregates listings from more than 80,000 sites across the country.
The deal with Wal-Mart should help Oodle compete against eBay's Kijiji and market leader Craigslist, which is currently involved in a lawsuit with eBay over Kijiji's launch in the U.S.
"We recently launched Walmart.com Classifieds beta to provide additional opportunities for our customers to save money and live better," said Walmart.com spokesman Ravi Jariwala in an e-mail. "This free, community-based resource allows customers to buy and sell items locally, find local jobs and learn about events in their area."
Jariwala said the new classified site offers customers products and services not typically available at Walmart.com, such as job listings, automobile sales, rentals and real estate.
"It also further connects our community of 130 million customers who shop the Wal-Mart brand each week," Jariwala said.
