Now Boingo subscribers can enjoy Wi-Fi with their Big Macs
Deal enables use of Wayport hot spots at McDonald's, others
Computerworld - Starting today, subscribers to Boingo Wireless Inc.'s Wi-Fi hot spots will have access to hot spots from Wayport Inc., including access at more than 9,000 McDonald's restaurants in the U.S.
The expanded Wi-Fi access is the result of a strategic agreement between Wayport and Boingo announced today. The agreement extends a prior partnership between the companies for three more years, they said in a statement.
Wayport CEO Dave Vucina said the new agreement strengthens Wayport's philosophy of providing Wi-Fi access in locations such as McDonald's, "which is a perfect digital destination based on its ubiquity and accessibility." The agreement gives service to Boingo customers at other retail locations as well, although none were named.
Wayport is known as a "neutral host," which means it enables various wireless carriers and hot-spot aggregators such as Boingo to offer their own branded Wi-Fi through Wayport-enabled stores and other sites.
Boingo, meanwhile, has combined more than 100,000 locations from more than 150 Wi-Fi operators, including Wayport, into a global network.
