Motorola licenses WiMax chip set designs

Wireless apps maker Enfora is first licensee

February 11, 2008 12:00 PM ET

Computerworld - Motorola Inc. announced today that it is licensing its reference design for mobile WiMax radio chip sets, and that Enfora Inc. is its first licensee.

The reference design, known as the WTM1000 (for WiMax Terminal Modem), is designed to deliver ultra-high-speed functionality through thin devices, Motorola said in a statement. Motorola will be offering intellectual property licenses.

The program is designed to accelerate the expansion of WiMax into a wider consumer base, Motorola said.

"We hope to foster the development of great new mobile Wimax devices and applications across the industry," said Gary Koerper, vice president of platform planning and systems architecture at Motorola.

Enfora, which is based in Dallas, supplies wireless network systems that support location-based monitoring and asset-management applications. The WTM1000 will be used in Enfora's eWide wireless networking systems.
