GroundWork Open Source unveils IT monitoring app for Ubuntu Linux
The free program is available now to monitor IT infrastructures
Computerworld - GroundWork Open Source Inc.'s free IT infrastructure monitoring software is available now for the first time for Ubuntu Linux and other Debian-based Linux operating systems.
In an announcement today, the San Francisco-based company said it has released GroundWork Monitor Open Source for free download based on demand from the open-source community and an expanding Ubuntu user base.
The application allows users to monitor IT infrastructure on Windows, Unix, Novell SUSE and Red Hat Linux, HP-UX, IBM AIX and Solaris operating systems. The new Ubuntu version was built and tested on Ubuntu Server 6.06 LTS.
The professional version of the software, GroundWork Monitor Professional, which includes support and service and is available by paid contract, will be available for Ubuntu in the first quarter of 2008, said Kim Chen, director of marketing. "This is an example of GroundWork's commitment to not only our commercial customers but also to the open-source community," Chen said.
The Ubuntu version of the monitoring software includes the same features as the existing versions for Red Hat, SUSE, CentOS and VMware, according to the company.
"GroundWork combines the backing of a commercial software company with the strength of the open-source community and is responding to the strong demand for the GroundWork IT monitoring solutions for Ubuntu and other Debian-based Linux systems," Peter Mui, community director at GroundWork, said in a statement. "Ubuntu is an extremely popular Linux distribution, and it is natural for us to make GroundWork Monitor Open Source available on that platform."
Support for installation, configuration and deployment of GroundWork Monitor Open Source for Ubuntu is available through community forums. "Our vision is for Ubuntu users and all Debian users to have access to high-quality IT monitoring comparable to proprietary systems costing hundreds of thousands of dollars," Mui said.
