Brief: Google Book Search offers new ways to search books

Users can create their own personal libraries

September 6, 2007 12:00 PM ET

Computerworld - Google Inc. today launched new features for Google Book Search designed to make it easier for users to organize and find books online.

According to Google, the new features allow users to:

  • Create and search their own library built on Google Book Search, so they can organize, annotate and do a full text search through the books they have chosen. For example, a student could build a collection of sources for an upcoming term paper, and then use Google Book Search to quickly find which book and page contains a needed reference.
  • Share their expertise by allowing them to annotate their libraries with labels, write reviews, rate books and then share their collections with others by sending them a link to their libraries. Users can also create RSS feeds so friends are alerted when they add new books to their collections.
  • Explore popular passages. Google displays a quotation or some other excerpt from a book that appears in a variety of sources. By exploring popular passage links, users can see how an excerpt has been used throughout time and discover connections between books.
  • Select, clip and post text, allowing users to grab selections of text from out-of-copyright books to share their favorite passages or quotes with others.
