Honor vanguard: Computerworld Honors Program names awards recipients for 2007
Ten organizations recognized for IT achievements; three individuals receive leadership awards
June 4, 2007 12:00 PM ETComputerworld - WASHINGTON -- At a gala ceremony here Monday night, the recipients of the 2007 Computerworld Honors Program awards were announced, including 10 organizations that were recognized for using technology to promote social, educational or economic advances.
The 10 recipients of this year's 21st Century Achievement Awards were chosen from among 50 finalists -- five in each category. In turn, the finalists came from a group of 234 companies and organizations that were designated as 2007 laureates for submitting case studies about technology projects that met a total of 10 criteria.
The following is a list of the Achievement Awards recipients by category:
Business & Related Services
QlikTech International AB
QlikTech, which was founded in Sweden and now is based in Radnor, Pa., has developed data visualization software with in-memory data loading and manipulation capabilities for business intelligence applications.
Education
Defense Acquisition University
A unit of the U.S. Department of Defense that is based at Fort Belvoir, Va., the DAU has created an enterprisewide data mart that combines information from more than 40 previously disconnected data sources.
Environment, Energy & Agriculture
BP PLC
The London-based energy company built a "hurricane management system" in an effort to enable its operations in the Gulf of Mexico to track weather patterns and company assets, in order to maximize production and increase employee safety.
Finance, Insurance & Real Estate
Advance America
Formally known as AARC Inc., the Spartanburg, S.C.-based provider of payday cash-advance services installed a grid computing system that uses the Web to link each of its more than 2,600 retail offices to a consolidated database and applications platform.
Government
Navajo Nation
The Navajo Nation's Department of Information Technology has deployed an integrated network that provides Internet access and voice, video and data services to the Window Rock, Ariz.-based nation's 110 "chapter houses," or community centers.
Health Care
The Danish National e-Health Portal
Developed jointly by various government agencies and health care organizations in Denmark, the www.sundhed.dk portal enables Danish citizens and health care professionals to communicate and collaborate via a single Web-based interface.
Manufacturing
Varian Medical Systems Inc.
The Palo Alto, Calif.-based maker of medical equipment has developed technology for delivering an advanced form of radiation therapy treatment to cancer patients, expanding the number of tumors that can be treated via radiation.
Media, Arts & Entertainment
The J. Paul Getty Trust
The trust, based in Los Angeles, uses a suite of Web-based systems to make information about art widely accessible and to promote standards, best practices and tools for creating, preserving and delivering the information electronically.
Nonprofit Organizations
Medical Missions for Children
The Paterson, N.J.-based organization uses a telemedicine network with video collaboration capabilities to help improve the care available to children with severe medical conditions in areas worldwide that are underserved by health care professionals.
