NetIQ enhances network management product

It's including support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003

September 29, 2003 12:00 PM ET

Computerworld - NetIQ Corp. today announced enhancements to its network management product line, including support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, which is due out next month.
The San Jose company also announced AppAnalyzer for Exchange 3.0, a Web-based reporting and analysis tool to help IT shops analyze usage on Exchange servers. New features include Outlook Web Access usage reporting capability and a status page.
Corey Ferengul, an analyst at Meta Group Inc. in Stamford, Conn., said NetIQ is the leader in the Windows monitoring market, with about 35% of the available market share and about 20 different product offerings.
NetIQ's competitors include IBM and its Tivoli division, Hewlett-Packard Co., BMC Software Inc., Computer Associates International Inc., BindView Corp. in Houston, and Quest Software Inc. in Irvine, Calif.
One NetIQ customer, Cox Target Media, has deployed a NetIQ module for managing Exchange called AppManager for about 18 months and found it simpler to deploy than a comparable product from BMC, said Chris Cate, director of data systems at Cox.
Cox Target Media Inc., based in Largo, Fla., makes ValPak coupons and is a division of Cox Enterprises.
"AppManager provides everything we need today, and when the time is right for us, based upon our success with NetIQ, we'll certainly evaluate the product's new functionality," Cate said. AppManager monitors about 50 NT servers and 20 Linux-based servers on the public-facing ValPak Web site. With NetIQ, Cate said he can monitor memory and CPU allocation on the machines and track trends.
In the past, noting the trends has helped him capture loop processes that drive up CPU usage, enabling him to get rid of the loops.
