Brief: Qwest to sell Sprint wireless voice and data
The deal is expected to be in place by early 2004
August 4, 2003 12:00 PM ETComputerworld -
Qwest Communications International Inc. and Sprint Corp. today announced a wholesale agreement that will provide Sprint's nationwide wireless voice and data service to Qwest's business customers nationwide.
In addition, Qwest's new and existing consumer customers throughout its 14-state local service region can receive the Sprint services under Sprint's PCS Vision plan. The companies said they expect most of Qwest's existing wireless customers to take part in the transition, which is expected to be done by early next year.
The announcement is "good news for both companies," said Jeff Kagan, an independent analyst based in Atlanta.
Denver-based Qwest gets a proven brand name for its customers, while Sprint gets a "truckload" of new customers and revenue, he said. Qwest needed Sprint's wireless service to be bundled with its wireline offerings, since the marketing dynamic is changing toward bundled services.
Qwest also said it will offer calling plans early next year, such as "one-number" service that allows a customer to use their home or office number as their wireless number, a feature that can be turned off with a few keystrokes. Also, a home/office link function will allow unanswered calls to a Qwest wireless phone to ring through to a home or business phone.
