Computerworld - Security Bookshelf

Hacking Exposed, 4th Edition, by Stuart McClure, Joel Scambray and George Kurtz; McGraw-Hill Osborne Media, 2003.

What I like most about the Hacking Exposed books is the organization and volume of information presented. This edition takes the reader from the initial assessment to the actual steps necessary to hack into everything from Windows NT to Unix to network gear and even wireless networks. It contains information on Web hacking techniques, wireless hacking and distributed denial-of-service tools, as well as case studies. The only thing missing is a CD-ROM containing the tools discussed. -- Mathias Thurman (mathias_thurman@yahoo.com)

Euro Gets Tagged

The European Central Bank (ECB) is in talks with Hitachi Ltd. about embedding radio tags in euro bank notes, according to Japanese news agency Kyodo. The ECB is considering embedding Tokyo-based Hitachi's Mu-chip, the world's smallest integrated circuit, into euro notes to prevent counterfeiting.

The Mu-chip could also be used in passports and other official documents, according to Hitachi's Web site.

RSA Bundles Thor

RSA Security Inc. in Bedford, Mass., will bundle application provisioning software from New York-based Thor Technologies Inc. with RSA's ClearTrust identity management and access control software. The integration lets users centralize ID management and policy administration and enables end user self-service account creation, profile management and password-reset capabilities, according to a joint press release. The offering ships in the third quarter.
