Mac OS X UML modeling tool released for developers

April 15, 2003 12:00 PM ET

Macworld - Excel Software has released QuickUML Mac OS X, an object-oriented design tool for a core set of Unified Modeling Language (UML) models. It's the first Mac OS X addition to Excel's suite of Mac OS 9, Windows and Linux software engineering tools. It runs on Mac OS X 10.1 or later.

UML is the industry-standard language for specifying, visualizing, constructing and documenting the artifacts of software systems. It's designed to simplify the complex process of software design by making a "blueprint" for construction.

With QuickUML Mac OS X, an entire QuickUML project is accessible through a tabbed window of use cases, class models, object models, dictionaries and code. The project is saved as an XML file that's compatible with the Windows and Linux editions of QuickUML (as well as, of course, the Macintosh version). QuickUML works with Excel Software's MacTranslator. MacTranslator is a re-engineering tool that generates UML class models for C++, Java and Object Pascal, as well as structure charts from C, Pascal, Basic and Fortran.

QuickUML has features for projects with multiple programming languages, design namespaces, UML stereotypes, color support, diagram scaling, custom detail fields, context-sensitive help, print preview, print to PDF and automated generation of class models from the dictionary. Diagrams can be exported as BMP, JPEG, JPEG 2000, MacPaint, Photoshop, PICT, PNG, QuickTime Image, SGI Image, TGA and TIFF files. An integrated code manager enables navigation through code files linked to use cases and diagram objects, according to MacTech magazine.

A single user license for QuickUML for Mac OS X is $495 and includes a printed and a PDF manual on CD.
