Data Warehouse Defined

Computerworld - Stefan Jon Silverman, president of SJS Associates NA, a technology strategy consultancy in San Francisco, offers the following outline of the characteristics that define a data warehouse:


  • Characterized by an I/O profile favoring batch process reads from the data store.Updates are usually accomplished by batch processes.

  • Data storage is long term and usually of a time-series nature.

  • Stores are implemented in hierarchical fashion, characterized by a big raw data store and successive levels of summarization in query tables.

  • Uses are mostly for decision-support, statistical analysis and customer relationship management systems.
