PC Expo kicks off in NYC next week
Computerworld -
The 19th annual PC Expo, now part of Techxny (Technology Exchange Week New York), opens in the Big Apple next week. The event will feature mobile, wireless and business products, leading-edge security advances, and new developments in Linux, storage technologies and more, organizers said.
Show director Christina Condos said the show will be more content-driven than it has been in the past.
"This year, it's more of a content event and less of an expo," she said. "We've found that our attendees want more education, not just products. We'll have programs for a lot of different communities, such as the financial and corporate attendees. And we'll have sessions that focus on security and privacy. This year, there will also be a bigger focus on the women attendees."
Condos said that about 500 exhibitors and 50,000 attendees are expected at Techxny, which will be held at New York's Jacob Javits Convention Center.
Some of the new products that will be featured at this year's PC Expo include the following:
- The IQ 710, a frame-relay device, from AdTran Inc. in Huntsville, Ala. It's an all-encompassing performance-monitoring device to address all seven layers of the network, according to the company.
- RiteMail, a mobile multiplatform, handwritten e-mail application from the new Pen & Internet division of Parascript LLC in Boulder, Colo. This software allows users to transmit handwritten messages via e-mail to and from personal digital assistants, laptops, wireless feature phones, tablet PC devices and electronic whiteboards, or between mobile devices and desktop computers. Parascript will also launch the Pen & Internet unit at PC Expo.
- The WebDT 380, a network/thin-client product for wireless and mobile connectivity to the Internet and intranets, made by DT Research Inc. in Milpitas, Calif. WebDT380 offers users a thin film transistor display and high bandwidth connectivity, the company said. The WebDT 380 integrates a complete set of Web browsing and thin-client/server computing for consumer and commercial applications.
- The Dell Digital Audio Receiver. This device from Dell Computer Corp. lets users listen to CD-quality music stored on a PC in any room of the house by distributing audio to remote receivers or home stereo systems.
- The Satellite Pro 4600, a notebook/laptop computer by Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. in New York. It offers Server Message Block customers five ways to connect: integrated Wi-Fi (802.11b), integrated Ethernet, V.90 modem, fast IR or Toshiba's Bluetooth PC Card, the company said.
- Toshiba's Satellite 3005. At just over 5.5 pounds, it features three USB ports, a swappable modular bay for increased productivity and a multimedia feature set.
