Computerworld - During a lunch break, IT staffers at Medtronic Inc. can pick up a Caribou coffee, grab some cash at the ATM, mail a package and drop off their dry cleaning -- all without leaving the facility.

The medical device company's 75-acre, airport-like campus near Minneapolis, which opened in October 2007, also includes a car maintenance shop, a health care clinic, a restaurant, 18 "mothers' rooms" and outdoor walking paths.

Even better than the conveniences is the IT unit's working environment, which is collaborative and highly focused. "IT staff is engaged in projects that make a difference in people's lives," says Katie Klungseth, senior employee engagement specialist for human resources shared services IT. The company manufactures medical devices such as implanted defibrillators, pacemakers, biologic delivery devices and diagnostic tools for patients with chronic diseases.

Medtronic also recognizes the accomplishments of global IT employees and teams with its annual CIO Award.
