Dell will double staff in India to 20,000

Most of the company's employees there work in call centers

March 20, 2006 12:00 PM ET

IDG News Service - Computer maker Dell Inc. plans to double the number of staffers it employs in India over the next three years to about 20,000, according to the company's chairman.

The Round Rock, Texas-based company has 10,000 staffers in India. Most of them work in call centers, though the company also employs about 300 engineers to develop and test enterprise products such as servers and storage systems. The company plans to double the number of these engineers doing product development in India over the next two years.

Dell announced earlier this year that it plans to manufacture in India. It will initially build there to satisfy local demand and then look at exports from India, Chairman Michael Dell told reporters in Bangalore today.

The company's business in India grew by 40% in the company's fourth quarter, which ended Feb. 3, and it is expected to grow by more than that in this quarter, Dell said.

The company plans to initially assemble its products in India, though down the line it may look at more extensive manufacturing in the country if a base of manufacturers of components such as semiconductors and LCDs emerges, Dell said.

The company is currently in discussions with a number of states in India to select the location for the facility, he said.
