Computerworld - Microsoft Corp. said today that its upcoming 2007 Microsoft Office will come in seven versions and that many of them will include new collaboration and content management tools.
Microsoft also announced retail prices for the productivity suite along with individual applications, though it did not give out prices for the volume licenses typically purchased by big businesses.
Formerly known as Microsoft Office 12, the software is expected to arrive by year's end.
For volume business-license customers, Office Professional Plus 2007, the update to Office Professional Enterprise Edition 2003, will be integrated with SharePoint Server 2007 and include Office Communicator, which are collaboration and information management tools.
A new volume bundle, called Office Enterprise 2007, will, in addition to 2007 versions of Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Access, Publisher and Communicator, also include three new pieces of software: Office Groove 2007, which enables teams to collaborate remotely in real time; Office OneNote 2007, which allows users to take notes, including handwritten notes and drawings, like they would on a physical notepad; and InfoPath, a tool for designing forms for content management.
Another change to the lineup is that Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007, an updated release of Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003, which had been restricted to educational buyers, will be available for home users for $149. It includes 2007 versions of Excel, PowerPoint, Word and OneNote.
Other 2007 bundles include Office Professional for a list retail price of $499; Office Small Business, for $449; Office Standard, for $399; and Office Basic, which had no price quoted.
Microsoft is also introducing new content management software, such as Forms Server 2007 and Project Portfolio Server.
Microsoft will have two new license bundles for desktop PCs that access Microsoft server software. Its new Enterprise Client Access License (CAL) will include Windows Server, Exchange Server, Office Sharepoint Portal Server and Systems Management Server, plus new capabilities such as enterprise data searching and spreadsheet publishing. Microsoft did not release CAL prices.
