Phoenix makes your laptop rise from the ashes
Network World -
Phoenix Technologies Ltd., the company everyone associates with the computer BIOS, introduced new software this week called Recover Pro 6, which allows a full restoration of operating systems, applications and settings in the event a desktop PC or laptop fails.
I had a briefing with Milpitas, Calif.-based Phoenix this week, intrigued by a software offering from a BIOS vendor. Recover Pro is release 6 because the software has only been used by systems manufacturers such as Dell to recover data from customer's PCs. This version is the first version an end user can use.
Recover Pro lets users selectively restore a deleted file, restore the hard drive to a pre-crash state or rewind the laptop to pre-spyware conditions.
The recovery process can be easily accessed from a Windows interface or via the F4 hot key when Windows won't boot. In an uncharacteristic manner, I asked Phoenix to send me a copy of Recover Pro so I could try it out (on a non-Network World laptop, of course -- our IT department constantly reminds me not to fiddle with mine -- darn).
Recover Pro 6 software is available immediately and costs $49.95 -- a pittance to pay for such a helpful tool. It runs on Windows XP and Windows 2000 SP3 machines. If you have laptops or desktops that you don't backup in your organization, you might consider Recover Pro. You can buy it from PCMall, TechDepot or TigerDirect, among others.
