EMC adds Google Desktop search to Documentum

The content management system can find unstructured data across an enterprise

January 17, 2006 12:00 PM ET

Computerworld - EMC Corp. today announced that it has added Google Desktop for Enterprise to its single-query search function on the Documentum Enterprise Content Integration (ECI) Services.
Based on EMC's Documentum Version 5.3 software, the new desktop search feature can access unstructured content stored on desktops, including documents, Web pages, XML, and audio and video files, according to Lubor Ptacek, director of product marketing for EMC's software group. "This completes our strategy when it comes to Google search sources," he said. "We already supported Google Web site search ... and the Google Search Appliance, an enterprise search system that is used in data centers to index file systems. Now, we're able to do the desktop search index."
Ptacek said EMC is targeting call center employees with the search function. "That person is responding to calls and needs to very quickly come back with the right document that has the right answer," he said.
Data that can be queried with the Google Desktop feature could have been created inside or outside a company by file servers, databases or even online services such as Bloomberg news, Ptacek noted.
Documentum ECI Services software runs on standard servers and works by brokering out a query and sending it to all respective content sources. While each content source speaks a different language, the Google search engine provides adapters to translate each language and compiles the information from the multiple sources into a single view.
