Will Paying for Resume Placement on Job Boards Help Your Search?

CareerJournal - Paid search -- which involves paying for placement in Web-search results -- has proved to be one of Internet advertising's most successful models. But does it work for job seekers?
Though most job sites offer some kind of free resume listing, some also allow job seekers to pay to get their resumes to appear higher in a potential employer's search results. (CareerJournal.com offers job hunters a free resume-posting service only.) But what you get for your money varies by site, and as an increasing number of job seekers buy in, more resumes are competing for the top spots. So if you choose to pay for resume placement, it helps to understand how to maximize its benefits.
"As more and more people continue to pay for higher placement, you start diluting the effects of being in the top position," said Steve Rosenthal, chief executive of Checkpoint HR LLC, a human-resources outsourcing company in Edison, N.J., whose firm does most of its recruiting by posting ads online. "It's like how at theme parks you can pay to cut the line. Now everyone's doing it, so the lines are just as long."
