Apple releases Mac OS X v10.4.2
Macworld - Apple yesterday released Mac OS X v10.4.2, the latest version of the company's "Tiger" operating system, with both a client and server version. The new version is available for download for Tiger users from the Software Update system preference pane, and can also be downloaded from Apple's Web site.
Mac OS X v10.4.2 touts "overall improved reliability and compatibility for Mac OS X v10.4 and is recommended for all users," said Apple.
Specific fixes in this new release include changes for:
- File sharing using AFP and SMB/CIFS network file services
- Single sign-on authentication and reliable access to Active Directory servers
- Auto log-in for managed user accounts
- AirPort and wireless access
- Core Graphics, Core Audio, Core Image, including updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers
- Finder updates including finding on Kind and using Slideshow
- Synchronizing iDisk with .Mac installation reliability
- Managing Dashboard widgets
- Address Book, Automator, iCal, iChat, Mail, Safari, and Stickies applications
- Compatibility with third party applications and devices.
Apple has posted detailed information about what's changed in Mac OS X v10.4.2 on its Web site. Separate versions are available that update the original Mac OS X v10.4 release (listed as a Combo update), as well as an update for the more recently released 10.4.1. Users are urged to make sure to select the version appropriate to their installation if they do not use the Software Update system preference to download the update.
