Oracle releases critical security updates
Quarterly batch includes nearly 50 patches
IDG News Service - Oracle Corp. released its quarterly batch of security updates yesterday, providing fixes for several dozen security flaws in its database, application server, business applications and other products.
Oracle switched to a three-month release cycle for its patches at the start of this year. Before then, it released updates whenever they were ready, which some customers found unpredictable and disruptive. Releasing the patches together is intended to make it easier for managers who have to track, test and install them.
The program is similar to the monthly security update conducted by Microsoft Corp., which also released a series of fixes yesterday (See Microsoft patches IE, Word, Windows).
Oracle's latest updates, released on the Oracle Technology Network, cover current and past versions of all of Oracle's main product lines, as well as tools such as Enterprise Manager. They are available to customers who bought an Extended Maintenance Support contract.
Seventeen of the patches are for the E-Business suite of applications. They include patches for exploits that require only network access and no user authorization. There are also 12 patches each for Oracle's database and application server, six for the Oracle Collaboration Suite and two for Enterprise Manager.
The next batch of security updates is due Oct. 18.
