John Young, a longtime HP employee and engineer, serving as executive vice president of the company's Instrument, Computer Systems and Components Groups, is named CEO.

John Young retires; Lew Platt, an HP employee for 26 years, head of the Computer Systems Organization, is named CEO and president.

1999

Lew Platt retires; Carleton (Carly) Fiorina, head of the global service provider business unit at Lucent Technologies Inc., is named CEO and president.

Fiorina is dismissed; Mark Hurd, CEO of NCR Corp., is named CEO and member of the board.
