HP recalls 135,000 laptop battery packs

Several of them melted or charred the plastic cases of the laptops they were in

October 14, 2005 12:00 PM ET

IDG News Service - Hewlett-Packard Co. today recalled around 135,000 lithium ion rechargeable battery packs after several melted or charred the plastic cases of laptops, a company spokesman said.
The battery is used with the HP Pavilion, Compaq Presario, HP Compaq and Compaq Evo laptops, said Mike Hockey. The battery is made by a third-party vendor that HP would not identify.
Hockey said the company has received 16 reports of batteries overheating, with four instances of damage to the laptops.
Consumers can verify if they have the battery pack in question by going to www.hp.com/support/batteryreplacement. A new battery can be mailed in five to 10 days, and a postage-paid envelope will be provided to return the old one, Hockey said.
