December 26, 2003 (Computerworld) -- It's been a merry holiday season for online retailer Amazon.com, which today reported its busiest-ever holiday sales activity in the nine years it has been in business.
The Seattle-based company announced that it set a single-day record with more than 2.1 million products ordered around the world. That amounts to 24 items ordered per second. Spokesman Chris Bruzzo said the company isn't disclosing the actual date that record was hit for competitive financial reasons.
Amazon said that more than 1 million customer orders were shipped out on its peak business day this holiday season and that more than 99% of the orders were shipped in time to meet holiday deadlines worldwide.
The last order placed in time for Christmas delivery came into the company at 11:32 a.m. PST on Tuesday and was delivered to a customer in Vail, Colo., on Wednesday.
The largest number of shoppers on the company's Web site in a single hour was during Dec. 15, when the estimated number of visitors at Amazon.com during the peak 60-minute period topped 630,000, according to the company.
