Oracle reiterates support for 10.7 apps to end in mid-2003
IDG News Service -
Oracle Corp. will end support for Version 10.7 of its business applications suite in June 2003, despite customer requests for another extension, an Oracle executive said today.
"We think, based on the feedback we get, that June 2003 is the right time. It ends then; there will not be another extension," said Ron Wohl, executive vice president of applications development at Oracle. "We encourage 10.7 customers to migrate to a new release, either 11i or 11.0, before June 2003. You really need full support as an applications customer."
The support period was extended late last year after the Oracle Applications Users Group (OAUG) had raised the issue with the software maker (see story). This time around the OAUG will again consult its members, said OAUG President Jeremy Young.
"The OAUG will talk to its members about their upgrade and how they feel about an extension [of the support period]," he said.
Oracle has received requests for an extension, a spokeswoman said. At least one 10.7 user attending the AppsWorld conference in Amsterdam said he would like an extension.
"We only finished implementing 10.7 in October last year. We did a lot of customization and changes, a project that started late 1999, and are not ready to upgrade now," said Peter Bjork, systems architect at Swedish construction firm Skanska AB. "We will cope with support ending on 10.7, but I would like a push for an extension on support."
Because Wohl's statement about ending support was quite clear, Young said users like Bjork shouldn't get their hopes up.
"You have to be realistic. No company can continue to support every release they ever produce. There has to be a desupport date," Young said.
As of June 2003, Oracle will have supported 10.7 for seven years, said a company spokeswoman.
