Virtual reality pioneer Randy Pausch's last lecture

Via Slashdot, I spotted this item about Randy Pausch, a Carnegie Mellon professor and early virtual reality engineer/visionary. He has terminal pancreatic cancer, but gave a wonderful presentation this week about his life and his involvement with VR and related technologies, entitled "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams." The lecture discusses everything from Captain Kirk to virtual worlds, and many things in between. The first segment about his childhood dreams is here. In the next segment, shown below, he talks about VR in the early 1990s, and corporate and government VR experiments from that era.

There are a lot of interesting moments, not to mention funny recollections -- check out the class project demo from the 1990s shown in the fourth segment.

The full-length video is available from a dedicated Carnegie-Mellon page, but if the CMU server is struggling, click on the Google Video/YouTube links above.

You're still Lucky co'z you

You're still Lucky co'z you were given a chance to know how many days or months you still have, at least you could still be able to give your Last Lecture. just imagine 70% of people who died, did'nt have a chance to say "i love you" or good bye to their love ones.

That is why you shouldn't

That is why you shouldn't wait to say things like this when they are dying. I know some people consider me child-like but I say things to people when I see them. I just noticed too many positive things were being said at their death. Did you tell them that they were wonderful and how you view them when you last saw them. People assume too much. Yes you are loved but have you told anyone lately?

Hello Nancy, the Carnegie

Hello Nancy, the Carnegie Mellon page that has the streaming video links had a link last week offering a DVD of the presentation (not sure if it was free or paid) but it has since been taken down -- probably due to high demand. You can still watch the full-length videos via the Internet, though. I just tried both streaming video links on that page (Windows media, and Google video) and both worked fine.

I think the ABC News website had a transcript, but that was yesterday. I haven't looked to see if it's still there.
