Security Matters

IE7 Vulnerability already? Not really

The poor guys at IE7 didn't even get 24 hours before the first IE7 vulnerability was announced in their product.  Only, the vulnerability isn't really with IE7, it's really a problem with Outlook Express.   It can be exploited through IE7, but since the issue is with Outlook Express, it can probably be exploited through IE6 as well.  This doesn't make the situation for those of us in the security community much better, but at least it makes it so the IE7 development team can sleep a little better.  The Outlook Express development team however .... (Does Outlook Express still have a development team?)

I got the chance to talk to the IE7 Development team at the IE7 release party in San Francisco Wednesday night, and now the audio's been edited and posted.   My co-conspirator, Jeremiah Owyang, has neatly transcribed the conversation , but you have to listen to the audio to really get the feel for the energy level at the party.  Believe me, that made the recording much harder.

Thanks again to Gary Schare, Dean Hachamovitch and Chris Wilson for taking the time out at the party to talk to us.  And thanks for a great party.  Gotta go now, off to learn about Symantec's Security Response Lab and DeepSight Early Alert System.

FF serves you better in

FF serves you better in several areas. One, its faster. It can be manually configured to absolutely fly. Also, consider the convenience of never having to check webmail. Just plug in an extension and it is delivered to you.

Neither browser is without their risks - and their rewards. I won't join the FF = Perfection crowd just yet, but the newest version is nice, and I simply find it a little more secure, and a lot more convenient, than any version of IE.

Installed it, enjoy it. Much

Installed it, enjoy it. Much more flexible than IE6. Also installed FF2f, nice, but nothing unusual, no major changes. FF has no less bugs than IE, it is just what everyone thinks - IE buggy and FF perfect. Wrong...
I will stick w/ IE for now since I cannot find where FF serves me better.

IE7 seems to be too buggy.

IE7 seems to be too buggy. It's better not to install it until the situation become stable. Agree to the first comment, IE7 will be a primary target to hackers all over the world for some time.

Although they claim it's not

Although they claim it's not a bug in IE7, the sample exploit code does not function in fully-patched IE6 SP1. So installing IE7 makes you vulnerable to an exploit to which you were not previously vulnerable. Pointing fingers at another internal development team is just childish.

Isn't OE going to be

Isn't OE going to be replaced by Windows Live Mail Desktop? AFAIK, it's not integrated with IE 7 yet.

OE is a dead end buggy

OE is a dead end buggy freeware product that should be purged from all enterprise systems.

I'm sure the development resources are being spent on the full product.

The Chinese, Pakistani

The Chinese, Pakistani and/or Russian hackers will find a dozen holes in IE7 by next week. Of that you can be certain.
