Seeing Through Windows

Will Vista kill the Internet?

Don't have enough to worry about? Consider this: The father of the Internet's DNS system warns that widespread use of Vista could overload DNS servers worldwide, clogging the Internet, and slowing access to a crawl.

Paul Mockapetris told CNet that "You're going to see brownouts. All of a sudden, it is going to be mud season on the Internet, where things will just be kind of slow and gooey."

Mockapetris claims that because Vista simultaneously supports the next-generation IPv6 protocol, as well as the current IPv4, it makes two DNS calls instead of one for every request. That means doubling the load on DNS servers, which in turn means far more sluggish reaction times, including brownouts.

Microsoft, of course, begs to differ. I won't go into all the gory details, but it points out that for a variety of reasons, DNS traffic won't come close to doubling. And it claims that initial tests have borne this out.

The upshot? Practically once a day, Cassandras warn that the Internet as we know it is about to crash. Somehow, it never happens. I think it'll survive Vista as well.

What Vista does is totally

What Vista does is totally screw up wireless networking. Every since I "upgraded" my internet connection is constantly messed up. So, I guess it kills the internet for wireless users!

After repeated trashings of

After repeated trashings of my PC thanks to screwed up, patched-up WindowsXP, I have switched to Linux, and with not an ounce of regret. I'd recommend it to anyone, and there are so many flavours of Linux out there, there's a distribution fit for virtually everyone. If you absolutely MUST use Windows, stick with XP. Wait a few years to see the direction in which Vista takes people and their PC's.

Well maybe the Broadband

Well maybe the Broadband Reform Act of 2006 and the bitching Telcoms should apply the 2 tier pricing to Microsoft exclusively, instead of rape the general consumer with their gise to play catch to "value-added" Internet innovation and turn the classic pyramid Internet Business Model upside down to serve their selfish "Karl Rove-like" controlling interests.
Enough said !

No but it will probably kill

No but it will probably kill M$ because as it is, it is bloatware. For it's benefits it demands to much in the way of resources.

I'll be hanging on to XP until MS no longer supports it then move to the MAC. If Vista is in my future it will be at work and not by my choice or referral.

XP allowed you to turn off

XP allowed you to turn off or uninstall IPv6. Will Vista allow the same?

If its the case that Vista

If its the case that Vista is such a hog, it won't take companies long to dump it.

Companies cannot/will not allow a system to back up traffic.

Even today corporations and people complain about how slow the net is.
