Ultimate Ears

UE Roll 2

The UE Roll 2 from Ultimate Ears looks like nothing so much as a colorful UFO, but it plays a lot more than the Close Encounters theme.

Weighing 0.7 lb. and measuring 1.6 in. high and 5.3 in. across, this portable Bluetooth speaker is the new, improved version of the last year's UE Roll. These improvements include, according to the company, a wireless range of up to 100 feet and battery life of up to 9 hours.

Like its predecessor, the device has a waterproof rating of IPX7, so you can immerse it up to 30 minutes. And it comes with its own "Floatie" to keep it bobbing on the waves -- well, you don't really want to listen to an underwater speaker, do you?

The UE Roll 2 also includes a bungee cord and several interesting color combinations with names like Habanero, Tropical Anime and Volcano. With all that, and a maximum sound level of 85dBA, you should be pretty much set for your next pool party.

Fugoo Sport

Fugoo Sport

When you see a lineup of Fugoo's Bluetooth speakers, it looks at first like seven different devices. In reality, each is one of two core devices -- the Fugoo and the larger Fugoo XL -- together with a jacket that both transforms it visually and adds additional protection. So you can check out the good-looking Fugoo Style or go mountain-climbing with the Fugoo Tough -- but for summer by the sea, you don't have to look any further than the Fugoo Sport.

The Sport is 2.3 x 7.4 x 2.9 in. and weighs 1.1 lb., with an IP67 rating that means it is not only waterproof but dustproof as well -- and, according to the company, can also withstand mud and the various shocks that electronic devices are heir to.

The speaker comes with six proprietary acoustic drivers: two 28mm tweeters, two 39mm woofers and two 43mm x 54mm passive radiators. Those, along with the aptX codec and a capacity of up to 97dBA, should give you the full sound that you want for your next party. And according to the company, the battery should last for up to 40 hours of non-stop sound.

JBL Charge 3

JBL Charge 3

JBL has a good reputation as a manufacturer of audio devices. Its latest Bluetooth speaker, the JBL Charge 3, could be described as a melding of the company's lightweight, waterproof Flip 3 and larger, more powerful Xtreme.

The 8.4 x 3.4 x 3.5 in., 1.8 lb. cylindrical device contains a pair of passive radiators to help pump up the bass and can reach up to 80dB. It has a 6,000mAh battery that, according to the company, not only offers up to 20 hours of use, but can recharge your phone while it plays. It has a waterproof rating of IPX7 and includes a rubber cover that protects its audio and charging ports.

The controls on top allow you not only to raise and lower the volume, but to accept incoming calls (the Charge 3 works as a speakerphone) and wirelessly connect multiple speakers. So you can hang by the pool, listen to your music, and then take that important call, all at the same time.

House of Marley Chant Sport

House of Marley Chant Sport

If you want a speaker that not only offers good sound and waterproofing, but is eco-friendly as well, check out the Chant Sport from the House of Marley. The 1.4 lb. cylindrical device is, according to the company, built of "blended bio-plastic, silicone and recyclable aluminum." At 7.8 in. high and 3.7 in. across, it's designed to fit in most cup and/or water bottle holders. (There's also an included carabiner so you can clip it onto your backpack.)

The Chant Sport offers up to 8 hours of play, has a built-in mic so it can be used as a speakerphone, and contains two 4.5W drivers plus a pair of passive radiators to enhance the bass.

And if you're out for a bike ride, don't worry if the skies open up -- it's got an IPX7 waterproof rating. Accidentally dropped it in the pond? It's designed to float.

Braven BRV-PRO

Braven BRV-PRO

One look at Braven's BRV-PRO Bluetooth speaker tells you that it's built to take a beating. The 6.4 x 1.5 x 2.8 in., 1.4 lb. speaker has a cage-like aluminum housing that, according to the company, can handle anything nature or humans can throw at it, together with a waterproof rating of IPX7.

However, it's the attachable accessories that make this one something to think about, especially if you're going camping or hiking. It not only offers an Action Mount ($15) for your bike or kayak and an extra battery pack ($50), but you can also connect up a solar panel ($50), while the Glow Deck ($30) uses LEDs to keep you from getting lost in the woods.

The BRV-PRO includes a mic so that you can use it as a speakerphone, has a 2,200mAh battery for up to 30 hours of audio, and has a range of up to 100 feet. You can get it in silver and black with blue trim, or black with red trim.

Scosche BoomBottle+

The BoomBottle+ is another Bluetooth speaker that can take a lickin' and keep on tickin' -- or, in this case, keep on playing. The cylindrical device is rated at IP67, which means it's dustproof and waterproof (and in case you drop it, it floats).

At 8.6 in. high and 2.8 in. across, this 1.5-lb. speaker is, like the Chant Sport, designed to fit into bottle holders. It offers dual 50mm drivers, a passive subwoofer and 360 degrees of audio coverage; the 6,000mAh battery will last, according to the company, up to 15 hours.

The BoomBottle+ also includes a lot of interesting additions. You can choose from two EQs -- Indoor or Outdoor -- depending on where you're listening. You can hook up the BoomBottle+ to additional speakers to either create real stereo sound or just make things louder. You can charge your smartphone from the speaker while you're listening. And you can even mount it on any standard tripod or other mount -- or hook it to your backpack with the included carabiner clip and take off for hot-weather adventures.
