It's the 1990s, and this consultant has spent several years assigned to a big manufacturer, according to a pilot fish on the scene.
"At one point, his manager came up with the brilliant idea -- and the head-count authorization -- to hire him permanently," says fish. "They had extensive conversations over the next few weeks and came to terms.
"Then the manager took him down to HR for the paperwork and to perform the normal hiring process. HR suddenly 'discovered' that the consultant did not have a bachelor's degree -- it was right there on his resume -- and declared that they could not hire him without one.
"His ability to do the job was never in question. He had been there for several years, performing well in the BI/Reporting area. He had a great reputation and was well-respected by company management.
"Everyone was a bit embarrassed by the situation, but he was still about two courses short of his degree. HR wouldn't budge, and the status remained quo.
"He stayed for several more years as a consultant, performing the required work well. He eventually moved on when he got tired of the assignment."
