Jony Ive gets promoted -- hands management drudgery to underlings

Ive: I get to design spaceships again

Jony Ive just got a promotion

Stephen Fry has news for you: He once met Steve Jobs and burst through the reality distortion field, popping it like a bubble. Because of this, Fry annoyed himself (for bursting the bubble and annoying Steve Jobs) as well as Steve Jobs (for the very same reason).

Incidentally, Jony Ive just got a promotion.

Stephen Fry drops a bombshell:

I stood last week at the entrance to 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, the coolest address in the universe, remembering the time I had gone inside and managed to annoy Steve Jobs.  MORE

Steven Musil points in a profitable direction:

Ive, 48, joined Apple...in 1992 and became its chief of industrial design after Apple co-founder Steve Jobs returned to the company in 1997. Under Ive's direction, Apple's put out a list of iconic products including the iMac, iPod, and iPad.  MORE

Remind Mike Beasley to show us the memo:

Ive's new role will still leave him in charge of the company's hardware and software design teams overall, but allowing others to handle the day-to-day affairs of each design group will free him up for other tasks.  MORE

Jon Fingas describes Jony Ive's hand:

[Ive has] had a hand in most of what Apple sells, and even helped shape the company's upcoming "spaceship" campus. The CDO role is arguably as much about giving Ive room to breathe as anything else -- he doesn't have to worry so much about splitting his attention in several different directions.  MORE

Napier Lopez delegates responsibility:

When asked why he relinquished control over two departments he'd been so successful with, Ive noted he is still in charge of them; his title is 'Chief Design Officer,' after all. The difference is he doesn't have to waste time with the boring management part of daily affairs.  MORE

Harry McCracken poses an insanely brilliant hypothetical question:

Is Jony Ive spending time designing office furniture for Apple's new HQ a great idea, or insane?   MORE

Meanwhile, Jeffrey Grossman takes time off to pursue other interests:

Maybe I'm just paranoid, but Jony Ive being promoted to Chief Design Officer sure feels like the start of phasing himself out of Apple.  MORE
