Big data meets Thanksgiving: Favorite foods by state

Analysts parse 78 million page views at Allrecipes to find the most popular Thanksgiving foods by state

What to cook for Thanksgiving? That's a question asked all across the United States this time of year, but the answers can depend on where you live.

Data analysts at AllRecipes.com and Tableau Software decided to parse 78 million recipe page views from last November to uncover most popular foods by state.

The Allrecipes.com data team used Adobe SiteCatalyst to track the page views, Amazon Web Services EC2 & S3 to get the raw data from Adobe and AWS RedShift to store and query the raw transactional data, according to a Tableau spokesman. They then sent about 2.5 million records -- the page-view count of every recipe in every state -- to data analyst Jewel Loree at Tableau.

The analysis took a portion of one day, she said, with some additional time the next day to design the interactive Web visualization below.

"It was fun to work with that data," she said. And while Loree was disappointed that deep-fried turkey didn't top the list in any state, she said she was pleasantly surprised "how many states considered Jello salad a salad."
